7 Not-to-Miss Spots on Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head vacation rentalIf a vacation to Hilton Head is on your 2014 New Year’s resolutions list, we certainly don’t blame you! Who could resist the allure of palm trees, crashing waves, pristine beach and plenty of shopping, eating and entertainment to boot?

If you’re coming to Hilton Head Island, though, there are certain places you’ve definitely got to see. Here are our picks for 7 Not-to-Miss Spots on Hilton Head:

1)      The Salty Dog Café – Everyone who comes to Hilton Head needs a Salty Dog T-Shirt. Stop by this laid back Hilton Head restaurant and outdoor bar within Sea Pines for a fish sandwich and cocktail while enjoying live music during the summer months. Don’t miss the Salty Dog Ice Cream Shop for a tasty dessert after your meal!

2)      The Shell Ring in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve – Did you know the history of Hilton Head dates back thousands of years? We’ve got proof! The 4000-year-old shell ring built by native Americans over a period of 300 years still remains in part in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve today.

3)      The Lagoon at Palmetto Dunes Resort – If you’re looking for peace, you’ll find it within the 11-mile inland lagoon that winds through homes and Hilton Head golf courses at Palmetto Dunes. Rent a kayak or canoe from Hilton Head Outfitters and wile away an afternoon watching island birds, cruising under hanging moss and listening to the quiet that surrounds you. It’s also an ideal spot for inland fishing.

4)      Tanger Outlets – Got the shopping bug? Hilton Head offers plenty of unique boutiques and shops as well, but you’ll get the most shopping bang for your buck at the popular Tanger Outlets in nearby Bluffton with some 85 stores to choose from.

5)      An Authentic Hilton Head Seafood Restaurant – You can’t come to Hilton Head without having some fresh seafood! We recommend Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks (don’t skip the hush puppies!), the Old Oyster Factory or the Crazy Crab just to name a few. Here are some other picks from the readers of Yelp.

6)      The Beach – With more than 12 miles of beautiful beaches on the island, you’re never far from the ocean. Head to one of several public beach access points or visit the beach from within any of the Hilton Head resorts where you may be staying. Keep your eyes open for dolphins!

7)      An Oceanfront Golf Course – Hilton Head is known as “the golf island” because there are so many golf courses to choose from. If you want the ultimate golf experience, play a round at one of the island’s two oceanfront golf courses: Robert Trent Jones at Palmetto Dunes Resort or HarbourTown Golf Links within Sea Pines.

8)      HarbourTown – Speaking of HarbourTown, a trek to the island just wouldn’t be complete without spotting the iconic red and white striped lighthouse located within HarbourTown. Climb to the top, visit the gift shop and enjoy the rest of the dining, shopping and entertainment that HarbourTown has to offer.

What did we miss? What would you tell visitors to be sure to see when they’re in Hilton Head?
