6 Ways to Honor Earth Day on Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head natureHilton Head Island is a natural paradise that has worked hard to preserve the beauty of the island without disturbing Mother Nature. In honor of Earth Day, April 22, we wanted to share 6 ways you can help honor Earth Day on your vacation to Hilton Head Island.

1)      Don’t disturb plants on the dunes – Many of the dune plants have roots that are close to the top of the sand, so if you walk or ride a bike through them you could easily damage or kill them. Without the plants holding the sand in place, it blows away and erodes the dunes, which provide a storm barrier.

2)      Turn off your beachfront lights – Beginning May 1-October 31, turn off outside lights facing the beach so you don’t confuse baby sea turtles. When they hatch, they look for the skylight reflected off the surface of the ocean water to lead them to sea.

3)      Don’t leave trash behind – If you enjoy our miles of beautiful beach on Hilton Head, be sure not to leave trash behind. Keep an eye on the tides, as well, so your items don’t wash away into the ocean.

4)      Fill holes in the sand – If you’re playing in the sand, fill in any large holes you make before leaving for the day. Baby sea turtles can become trapped and unable to reach the ocean upon hatching.

5)      Don’t take any live sea life – Leave live starfish, sand dollars and shells with occupants alone so they can survive and thrive at our beaches.

6)      Appreciate the beauty of the island – Most of all, get out and enjoy the beauty we have preserved here. It’s because of our remarkable respect for nature that Hilton Head Island is such a popular draw for so many!
