5 Ways to Help the Loggerhead Sea Turtle This Summer

Protecting loggerhead sea turtlesSea turtle nesting and hatching season is upon us once again and it’s critical that both residents and visitors do their part to help these threatened creatures who call Hilton Head Island home.

We’ve got 5 things to remember when you visit the island to help our beautiful loggerhead sea turtles:

  1. If you’re staying at a Hilton Head vacation home or villa that is visible to the beach, turn off any outside lights after 10 p.m. from May 1-October 31. Artificial lights can disorient the newly-hatched turtles.
  2. Turn off any interior lights, as well, that may be visible from the beach or close blinds and drapes to keep the light inside.
  3. Fill in any holes you dig on the beach during the day, as they can trap baby sea turtles heading out to sea.
  4. Clean up after yourself on the beach. Never leave trash, umbrellas, chairs, towels or anything else overnight on the beach, as they can entangle the baby sea turtles.
  5. Leave sea turtle nests undisturbed.

If you’d like to track the loggerhead sea turtles in our area, visit the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources website to see where and when nests have been spotted.

Thanks for your help!
