Fall Fishing on Hilton Head Island is Top Notch

Hilton Head red fishIf you’re looking for a great activity to try on Hilton Head Island this fall, consider fishing. Not only is it an activity that all ages can participate in – from the youngest toddler to Grandma and Grandpa – but it’s especially abundant when fall rolls around in the Lowcountry.

Red fish are a hot catch every autumn, as this is the time of the year that they spawn. You can find them in large groups in both inland creeks and lagoons, as well as inshore. With the water cooling a bit, they also begin to feed well. Try fishing at low tides that fall in the early morning and casting around oyster beds in small creeks.

Bay Street Outfitters in Beaufort and Palmetto Lagoon Charters on Hilton Head Island both report great fishing for red fish already! Bay Street says that suspended twitch baits, peeler crabs and DOA shrimp have been effective baits. Redfish can range in size from 1-40 pounds though average between 20-35 pounds.

Other fish you can catch in fall around Hilton Head include speckled trout, flounder, sheeps head, whiting, blue fish and sharks.
