Winter Fishing 101 on Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head fishingNot all the good fishing on Hilton Head Island is in the fall. There’s plenty yet to come this winter on the island, as well. A big benefit of winter fishing is the clearer water, enabling you to the see the fish you’re trying to catch!

Red fish are great to catch in fall and in winter, too. Because the waters are cooler, they tend to bunch in groups on the flats to stay warm. You can find them in schools of 50 to thousands of fish!

Their reaction time is also delayed in the cooler water, which means you can get closer to them without scaring them away. Still, a slow, quiet approach is always the best technique.

If you aren’t successful with one school of fish, move along until you find another. Keep going until you find a group ready to bite.

Other fish you can catch during the winter months include flounder and trout. Head offshore and see if you can catch up to 40-pound bull reds. On the nearshore wrecks, you may find weakfish, sheepshead, blue fish and black sea bass.

Do you have a favorite spot for fishing? Have you ever tried fishing in the winter months on Hilton Head?
